What Are Milady NFTs?

Milady NFTs are a collection of 10,000 anime-inspired profile picture NFTs, each with its unique style and cosmetic design. Created by digital arts collective Remilia, the collection was launched in August 2021 during the peak of NFT Summer.

The Milady Maker collection features five main style themes inspired by Tokyo's modern pop culture, including Gyaru, Prep, Lolita, Hypebeast, and Harajuku. Each Milady is assigned a "Drip Grade" that scores their outfit on a scale, with the highest being the SS Miladys, currently at a floor price of 6 ETH.

Ideology

While the Milady NFTs initially gained popularity for their unique design and affordable price, they soon became known for their controversial ideology. The Milady Maker collection features an inscrutable ideological universe that intersects various elements, including the polytheistic religion of Vedism, kaomoji callsigns, rave culture, venture capital, and the downtown New York podcast ecosystem.

Milady NFT is also associated with the Urbit project, an audacious attempt to rebuild the internet and computing from scratch, which currently functions as a slower version of AOL Instant Messenger. The collection features right-wing dog whistles and allusions to the accelerationist philosophy of writers like Nick Land, making it a polarizing figure in the crypto world.

On May 10, 2023, Elon Musk tweeted a meme created using imagery from the Milady NFT collection. Following Elon Musk's tweet featuring a Milady NFT, the floor price of the collection skyrocketed. The tweet featured a meme using imagery from the Milady NFT collection with the words "There is no meme, I love you." This caused the collection to trend on OpenSea, the popular NFT marketplace. The floor price of Milady NFTs hit an all-time high of 7.3 ETH (approximately $13,700) shortly after the tweet was posted, before settling down to 5.6 ETH at the time of writing.

This is not the first time that Elon Musk has impacted the value of a cryptocurrency or NFT project with his tweets. He has previously tweeted about Dogecoin, leading to a surge in the value of the cryptocurrency, as well as tweeting about other NFT collections such as Bored Ape Yacht Club.

The Milady NFTs gained mind-share in the Crypto Twitter ecosystem, despite the drawdown in the markets, making them a force in the future of NFTs. The collection currently has 39,659 ETH in cumulative volume traded on OpenSea, and it's frequently promoted by Su Zhu, co-founder of bankrupt Singaporean hedge fund Three Arrows Capital.

Despite their popularity, Milady NFTs have faced numerous controversies since their launch. In May 2022, the floor price of Milady NFTs fell by over 50% after allegations surfaced that their creator, Charlotte Fang, was involved in various fringe ideologies on the anonymous imageboard site 4chan.

Fang confirmed the authenticity of the alleged screenshots while stating, "trolling about it was juvenile, but in reality, I've never harmed a fly." The NFT artist stepped down from the team thereafter, adding more fuel to the Milady controversy.

Milady Maker also faced backlash after the launch of their "Milady, That B.I.T.C.H" project. Some of the avatars in a spin-off collection were wearing shirts bearing the word "Treblinka" – as in the Nazi concentration camp. The group claimed that the phrases on those shirts were assembled randomly, using text from a variety of sources, including a newsletter from the pseudonymous blogger and critic Angelicism01.
