In May 2017, Horizen was co-founded under the name ZenCash by Rob Viglione and Rolf Versluis.

In August 2018, the project was rebranded to its current name, Horizen.

In 2021, Horizen developed Zendoo - a new proving system designed with a novel sidechain construction.
